Many of us want to learn how to trust our intuition more. Often, implicit in this desire is a subconscious belief that our intuition is currently somehow not trustworthy - hence the need to improve it. So we try to hone our internal compass by engaging in various spiritual practices, journaling, meditating, going to therapy, etc. I encourage any of these if you are finding them helpful.
But I am coming to find that the most efficient way to become the kind of person who trusts one’s intuition, to fundamentally install the belief that your intuition is god’s whisper being expressed through you - is to practice trusting it 100% of the time. Practice trusting your intuition now, fully. Even if you find a rational reason why your “intuition” is “wrong” or actually just a manifestation of fear or trauma - which you likely will from time to time - by just trusting it fully now you are practicing the skill of coming to yourself for advice. You are practicing the skill of self-leadership.
If your ability to trust yourself always depends on proving that your intuition was “right,” then you will never be able to trust yourself fully because you are not always going to get the outcomes you desire. In fact, the point of your intuition is not to lead you to what you want, but to lead you to where you need to go next - and these are often not the same thing.
It’s similar to validating a young child for his/her performance, rather than simply celebrating his/her state of being. Deep down we all know that our self worth goes deeper than what we achieve or how “right” we are, but somehow we forget to apply this principle to trusting in our own judgment.
The point of trusting yourself is not to prove yourself right so that you can finally feel like you are worthy. The point of trusting yourself is to engage fully and vulnerably with your life, moment to moment, and learn the lessons you need to learn when that self-trust inevitably leads you “off the path.” Of course, when you zoom out far enough, you can never really go off path when every step you take is an honest one.
So trust yourself 100% now, and trust in the wisdom of your own mistakes: that is how you will grow wiser over time.
